Answer #1

Part-3 Synthesis of PVC gel.

8) Properties of original polyvinyl alcohol solution are

a) It is a synthetic polymer that is soluble in water.

b) It is effective in film forming, emulsifying, and has an adhesive quality.

c) It has no odor and is not toxic, and is resistant to grease, oils, and solvents.

d) It is ductile but strong, flexible, and functions as a high oxygen barrier.

9) Properties of PVC gel are

a) PVC gel forms a fibril-like network structure.

b) Crystallinity is very low for PVC gels.

c) PVC gel has a thicker network structure due to a larger degree of polymer aggregation.

d) The mesh size of the polymer network decreases with increasing polymer concentration.

10) Comparison of properties of PVA and PVC solution are,

a) The surface of PVA are more homogenous than that of PVC.

b) PVA has high electrical conductivity than PVC.

c) Both PVC and PVA are resistant to grease, oils, and solvents to a great extend.

d) PVC is brittle whereas PVA is ductile.

When sodium borate is added to PVA, a slime is formed which creates cross links between polymer chain.

11) The viscosity of PVA increases on adding sodium borate. More the sodium borate we add, the more cross links are formed between polymer chains which make the slime more viscous.

12) The polymer strands in the Teflon tapes are parallel in alignment to the long sides. When PTFE is made into tape, all of its polymer chains get ordered or lined up that make the polymer much stronger in one direction than another.
