In simple distillation, the liquid sample is heated for selective evaporation and condensation the two samples separate on the basis of difference in their boiling point as every liquid has its own boiling point due to difference in intermolecular forces holding the molecules together and thus basis of separation.
In fractionating column we have plates where condensation takes place easily on the basis of difference in boiling point. Lowest boiling liquid collects at the top.
Thus, fractions gets separated more efficiently.
Mole fraction is directly related to vapor pressure and hence boiling point.
If the difference in boiling point of two liquids is large then we use simple distillation.
When boiling point of two liquids has not much significant difference then we use fractional distillation.
