Because of possible complications at delivery, Mrs. T. is told by her doctor that she will have to give birth at South General Hospital. When Mrs. T. tells her friends what her doctor said, they are appalled and urge her to do all she can to go to Community Hospital instead. The friends draw sharp contrasts between the two hospitals. Community has quiet birthing rooms and was recently redecorated, and each patient is assigned a specific nurse. Because the nurses work 12-hour shifts, most women who deliver at the hospital have just one or two nurses attending to them. At South General, deliveries take place in ordinary, noisy hospital rooms. Staff tend to be busy and are not especially friendly, and women in labor are typically under the care of multiple nurses

  1. Describe three instances in which outcomes would not be a good measure of healthcare quality, and explain why.

Healthcare is one of the most important industry where every patient enters with trust and quality of service and care. The healthcare outcomes should always be good measure in order to bring patients to their healthcare centres with trust and belief that their issues and disease treated in the best way. The instances should bring always positive, there are certain cases that are registered both in community and general hospitals because of few instances. Let’s discuss the instances in which outcomes would not be a good measure of healthcare quality:

  • Lack of experts or physicians: Attending patient is very important at every point of time and interacting and coordinating with all concerns and proper solution is the first attempt in every healthcare. There are instances where patients face lot of issues sometime threat to their life if they are not attended within the time. There are medical emergencies and emergency cases which need immediate attention and immediate consult in that situations enough medical consultant or physician availability is more important. Unavailability of expert physicians sometimes results with bad outcome to the healthcare. Because every patient’s problem will be big for them and few are more worried though they have a small issue that inside pain and fear needs to be removed by a physician.
  • Lack of services: If proper care and service is not provided than that is also results with bad outcome and cannot be considered as good measure in the healthcare. Because healthcare is mostly considered as service based industry most of the patients expects good service and empathy and sympathy towards them. If that kind of empathy and concern is not shown towards a patient and the healthcare loose the trust from the patient. Always service needs to be provided and made available at demand. Every individual in the healthcare should feel and responsible for a good service to patients that brings more trust and faith in the healthcare.
  • Lack of equipment: The technology based services and laboratory also plays a crucial role in detecting the major issues in lesser time to address them on time. In previous days it took lot of time in fact days to detect any major issues because of lack of laboratory services and their un availability and cost. Now the technology is improved and better outcomes with less time. The unavailability of these equipment’s and lack of laboratory experts in the field will not bring great results in the healthcare

s per the above conversation, in recent healthcare complications most of them prefer community hospitals because these will have a dedicated nurses and complete attention will be paid on them and the complications that develops during delivery need complete care. Most of the women feel insecure in crowd and general wards because of different patients and noisy atmosphere. Especially during deliveries women need special care and privacy for the child and the mother and a special care and treatment is required after labour room. If she prefers general hospital than the availability of physicians and nurses will be limited and most of them are engaged with other patients. If there are any lack of services, equipment and physicians the resulted outcomes are not good measure to the healthcare.

  1. Do you agree that care can be both high quality and inefficient? Why or why not?

I agree that care can be high quality and it cannot be inefficient because, may be in another sector it can be quality and inefficient. Simple example if there is a quality of services in terms of healthcare atmosphere and equipment and interior of the healthcare but if there are inefficient healthcare physicians all these will go in vain. Always need a high quality and efficient physician for a quality based treatment and service to any patient. Care should be quality and at the same time efficient staff is required to provide a better service. If high quality care is provided under inefficient way that will bring bad result is obvious.

If everything is maintained in a corporate level and their treatment is provided under the supervision of a nurse or uncertified physician than that leads to a different consequence. The result would be something like “operation success but patient dead”. It’s should be both high quality and efficient.
