When light from the sun enters the earth’s atmosphere, it bends as the light moves from vacuum (index of refraction exactly 1) to air (index of refraction 1.0003). Given this, at sunset or sunrise the actual position of the sun doesn’t match the image of the sun, where the sun appears to be. Suppose you are watching the sun set, and the image of the sun vanishes at 7:30 PM. If you could see the actual position of the sun, would it set earlier or later than 7:30 PM? Draw a picture that shows the actual position of the sun and the image of the sun to justify your conclusion.
The actual sun is set earlier than 7:30 pm and due to refraction we see the sunset little later as well..
