Civil war is fought by own citizen against the government or other section of population .

Greed. When there is economic potential and on part of population thinks that they can benefit from implementation of a provision, then they first push for it through dialogue and legitimate means but when these fail, they resort to conflict that may turn I to civil war. eg civil war of US. There was demand from northern USA to abolish slavery as it was beneficial for them provided they were industrialist while southern state were agriculturist and required slaves for production labor. The situation reached a stage of civil war.

Grievance.

There can be certain grievances like there in Greece civil war where socio-economic grievances led to civil war against the government.

However in most cases greed and grievance combine to produce a civil war. Greed of certain population to dislodge the existing government amplify the people perception of grievances and force them into civil war.
