The rise in the percentage of Americans who are overweight has been blamed for the rise...

The rise in the percentage of Americans who are overweight has been blamed for the rise in diabetes rates. I decided to explore the relationship between these 2 variables by looking at a sample of state data (26 different states). I chose state overweight rates (% of state population who are overweight) as my predictor variable and state diabetes rates (% of state population with diabetes) as my response variable. Please use the MINITAB output displayed here to answer the questions that follow. (Note: I do not show the data here. Use the output and graphs to answer Questions 5 - 7.)

Regression Analysis: % with Diabetes versus % Overweight

The regression equation is

% with Diabetes = - 4.98 + 0.202 % Overweight

Predictor        Coef SE Coef      T      P

Constant       -4.984    4.124 -1.21 0.239

% Overweight 0.20232 0.06510   3.11 0.005

S = 1.02930   R-Sq = 28.7%   R-Sq(adj) = 25.7%

One state in my sample (Alabama) had an overweight rate of 70% and a diabetes rate of 10.1%. What is the predicted diabetes rate and the residual for Alabama?

a.

y-hat = 70% Residual = 9.16%

b.

y-hat = 9.16%  Residual = 0.94%

c.

y-hat = 10.1% Residual = 0.94%

d.

y-hat = 10.1% Residual = 9.16%

e.

y-hat = 8.42% Residual = 1.96%
