An Emergency Medical Service (EMS) may be defined as "a complete system which offers the provisions of employees, amenities and gear for the active, organized and timely provision of health and safety facilities to victims of unexpected sickness or injury." The purpose of EMS focuses on providing well-timed care to victims of sudden and life-threatening injuries or emergencies so as to avert needless mortality or long-term morbidity. The purpose of EMS are often streamlined into four main components; accessing emergency care, care within the community, care on the way , and care upon arrival to receiving care at the health care facility.
Emergency Medical Services or organizations work to provide higher quality and comprehensive pre-hospital care for patient in the community. These organizations help the hospitals by providing quality care to patients before they reach the hospital so that there is no loss of life and also they help reduce the damage to human life. EMS help hospitals by minimizing the trauma impact that is caused to patients and so this helps the hospital provide quality care to the patients.
The relationship between the local EMS and hospitals or long-term care facilities have improved a lot today as EMS keep hospitals well informed about the type of case or patient they are bringing to the hospital.
