For this assignment you will be assigned two compounds. The experiment uses 2-propanone you will be running, but in this experiment you will be running the experiment you will be using 2-pentanol. You will be using 15 mL of 2-pentanol for this experiment. Because of this we will have to adjust the amount of the other reagents. Answer the questions below in detail. Explain your answers and show your work.
1. Assuming that you should use the same volume of glacial acetic acid per mole of alcohol as in the given procedure (50 mL, 0.87 mol), determine the volume of the acetic acid you will see.
The no. of moles of acetic acid = 0.87 mol
Here, no. of moles of the acetic acid = mass of acetic acid/molar mass of acetic acid
i.e. 0.87 mol = mass of acetic acid/(60 g/mol)
i.e. The mass of acetic acid = 0.87 mol * 60 g/mol = 52.2 g
The density of the acetic acid = mass of the acetic acid/volume of acetic acid
i.e. 1.05 g/mL = 52.2 g/volume of acetic acid
Therefore, the volume of acetic acid = 52.2 g/(1.05 g/mL) = 49.7 mL
