Describe “Design Constraint Analysis”(definition)
No handwriting please.
Design constraints are limiting parameters or boundaries within which the system is to be designed.
A design constraint refers to a limitation on the requirements and/or operation conditions under which a system design is expected to operate.
For example-
To design aircraft, following are the constraints-
1) Dimensional and compatibility constraints
This related to the constraints applied to the dimensions of seats, tray tables, windows, etc. Like tray table has a limited amount of volume to set up in the plane according to which dimensional and compatibility constraints come into the role.
Analysis — After a few design iterations, we were able to accommodate the space provided in a standard plane seat. By reanalyzing our own design, we were able to design the proper seats and tray tables.
2) Weight minimization constraint
It is an important part while designing the aircraft. Limiting weight improves the efficiency of the overall craft.
Analysis — Overall we determined that our assembly would be about (say) 5 lbs, according to which we can design outer and inner parts, thus according to which design constraint can be successfully met.
3) Deflection limitation constraint
The tray table structure must provide enough stiffness so that it does not deflect too much under a typical loading. If the deflection is too great, the table loses its functionality.
Analysis — From the finite element analysis, we found that using a loading of 50 pounds, we would have a maximum deflection of approximately 2 inches. Loads that large would likely not often be applied to the table, so a deflection of this amount is not unreasonable. During typical loading (placing a drink or plate of food on the table) the displacement would be far less, and would not be sufficient to cause issues. That amount of deflection, however, could be somewhat problematic and is the weakest point of our design. In future iterations, we would likely try to solve this issue by reinforcing the support system in some manner.
