You want to build a grandfather clock with a pendulum (a weight on the end of a light cable) that has one second between its "tick" (swinging to) and its "tock"(swinging fro).
(a) How long do you make the cable?

(b) Suppose the cable stretches a bit from the weight on the end. Will the clock run fast or slow?

Time period = 1 second

T = 2pi ( l/g)^0.5
length = l = 0.248 meters


b.
Clock runs slow !!

Well, a period is one full swing, back and forth (or to and fro). So you want the period to be 2 seconds. The formula to find the period of a pendulumis:
P=2pi*sqrt(l/g)
where P=period
pi=pi
l=length of the pendulum
g=acceleration from gravity (9.8m/s2)

You want to know the length, so solve for l.
l=(g*P^2)/(4pi^2)

You know:
g=9.8m/s2
P=2s
pi=3.14159...

b. If the string streched, then l will be higher, causing P to be higher. This means that the pendulum will swing faster.
