Do you remember the good old days, 10 15 years ago, when you needed a particular piece of furniture to hide your TV? These TVs literally had an electron gun, and were producing the image be steering electrons on a phosphorescent screen. Do you still have one of these old TVs that are about 2 feet deep (I do!). Why were these TVs so deep? The old TVs accelerate electrons towards the screen through potential differences of thousands of volts over just a few centimeters. Use a capacitor like we discussed it in class when we calculated the speed of protons. Once the electrons are accelerated, they are somehow bent towards different parts of the screen to make up the picture I once opened one of these TVs to investigate in detail. I found imprinted "5500V" on a part that looked like two capacitor plates, indicating that a potential difference of 5500v is maintained between these capacitor plates. Definitely do not open your TV while it is plugged in! also measured that the distance that was used for the acceleration of the electrons was 1.5cm long a) Draw a picture and explain how based on this information you think these old TVs work. This does not have to be correct, it should just make sense(: Feel free to invent a new old TV. Make sure you describe it in words. b) Draw a free body diagram of the electrons in the electric field of the TV.
