We compare the yield of ATP obtained when glucose is
completely oxidised to CO2 and water with that obtained
when palmitic acid or stearic acid is similarly oxidised.
This comparison is done on the basis of what is essential-
ly the yield of ATP produced per carbon atom oxidised
to CO2 expresses the yield in terms of
ATP produced per 18 carbon atoms while Moran et al.
express the yield per 16 carbon atoms). From the
"gures presented, one can calculate that somewhere be-
tween 1.25 and 2 more molecules of ATP are produced
per carbon atom when palmitic or stearic acid is com-
pletely oxidised than when glucose is similarly oxidised
