The total number of vibrations for nonlinear molecules can be calculated using the formula:

= 3N-6

where N is equal to the number of atoms within the molecule.

for acetonitrile CH3CN which is non linear has 6 atoms in one molecule hence, N = 6

Now, total number of vibrations = 3 x 6 -6

= 12 vibrations.
