Continuously operated stirred tank reactor has been design on the assumption of perfect mixing to achieve 90% conversion of the first order reaction. Subsequent flow patterns study (flow visualization and RTD measurements) indicate that: (i) 65% of the volume is well mixed, (ii) 20%, of the volume locally exhibits plug flow (ii) 15% volume is inactive and 25% of the feed bypass the reactor.
