Assignment Brief
You have been appointed as a business analyst at Carlson Department
Store. Your first project is to provide an analysis for an
insurance claim for the company’s loss of sales for quarter 4 of
last year due to a hurricane last summer. In your analysis, you are
to make appropriate recommendations in relation to sales the
company would have had.
A. Background
The Carlson Department Store suffered heavy damage after a
hurricane struck late last summer. The store was closed for four
months (September through December), and the company is now
involved in a dispute with its insurance company about the amount
of lost sales during the time the store was closed. Two key issues
must be resolved: (a) The amount of sales Carlson would have made
if the hurricane had not struck and (b) whether the company is
entitled to any compensation for potential excess sales due to
increase in business activity after the storm, which would have
occurred if the store had not been damaged. This is because more
than 8 billion dollars in federal disaster relief and insurance
money came into the county, resulting in increased sales at
department stores and numerous other businesses.
As a business analyst for the case, you are provided with 48 months
of Carlson’s total sales data preceding the storm for their
department store in the county; you are also given countywide total
sales for all department stores in the months the Carlson
Department Store was closed. The data file dataForProject.xlsx is
available on Titanium.
B. Tasks
Carlson’s managers asked you to
o analyze these data and develop estimates of the lost sales at the
Carlson Department Store for the months of September, October,
November and December.
o determine whether a case can be made for excess storm-related
sales during the same period. If such a case can be made, the
company is entitled to compensation for excess sales it would have
earned in addition to ordinary sales.
o From your analysis, you are to produce a managerial report that
summarizes your findings, forecasts and recommendations. Your
report must include the following:
a. An estimate of sales for Carlson Department Store had there been
no hurricane.
b. An estimate of countywide department store sales had there been
no hurricane.
c. An estimate of lost sales for the Carlson Department Store for
September, October, November and December of last year.
d. Use the countywide actual department stores sales for September
through December and the estimate in part (b) to make a case for or
against excess storm-related sales.
C. Project Requirements
o You are to use appropriate forecasting technique(s) to analyze
the sales data using Microsoft Excel (10 points)
a. The forecast should accurately represent the current situation
and allow you to explore and evaluate the company’s lost
sales.
b. The results should provide information to assist you in writing
your report addressing the issues required above.
c. Using the submission section on Titanium, submit a copy of your
Excel analyses.
o You are to produce one report (800 words) summarizing your
evaluation of the analysis results for the company (10
points)
a. The report must address the questions listed under the Tasks
section.
b. The report must be written in a narrative style. Do not use
bullet points to answer the listed questions (points will be
deducted if you do so).
c. Submit your report (in Microsoft Word) via Titanium using the
assignment submission section.
As per HomeworkLib policy we need to solve one question per post. Please post the remaining questions in another post.
