Geog140 Introduction to Weather Interpreting Fronts on a Surface Weather Map Name: The map (on the other side) contains coded weather station information for the central and eastern portion of the U.S. Recall the procedure for coding (or in this case, deciphering) weather station data and answer the following questions, annotate appropriately: 1. What is the highest temperature on the map? 2. What is the lowest temperature on the map? 3. What is the highest atmospheric pressure on the map? 4. What is the lowest atmospheric pressure on the map? 5. The center of a midlatitude cyclone is in the vicinity of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Locate the Sioux Falls weather station and place an "L" over the station to represent the center of the low pressure system. Compare the posted temperature and wind directions for stations that are situated outward from Sioux Falls. Identify the location of the warm front and cold front that are associated with the system. Both fronts extend outward from the center of the low by at least 600 miles. Recall that there are three sectors within a mid latitude cyclone that are separated by the fronts: . the cool sector, ahead of the advancing warm front the warm sector, situated between the warm and cold fronts . the cold sector that follows the cold front and is pushed along by northwest winds 6. Construct a line that represents the warm front. The line should be at least 500 miles in length. Mark the location of the warm front using the appropriate symbol. 7. Construct a line that represents the cold front. The line should be at least 500 miles in length. Mark the location of the cold front using the appropriate symbol. 8. Label the cold, cool, and warm sectors on the surface weather map. 9. Identify the location that is most likely to experience a thunderstorm. Use the appropriate weather station symbol for thunderstorm activity: north/south/east/west 10. What direction is the system (generally) moving? (circle one)

Answer #1

1) The highest temperature on the map is 81 oF in Lousiana.

2) The lowest temperature on the map is 54 oF in North Dakota.

3) The highest atmospheric pressure on the map is 1022.0 mb ( i.e 220 on station model) in Florida.

4)  The lowest atmospheric pressure on the map is 994.5 mb (i.e 945 on station model) in South Dakota.

5) See the location L on the map below.

6) A warm front is the transition zone from which warm air mass completes and cold air mass starts. It is indicated by the red color on the map as shown below.

7) A cold front is the transition zone from which cold air mass completes and warm air mass starts. It is indicated by the blue color on the map as shown below.

8) See the located cold air mass and warm air mass region on the following map.

9) Weather stations just after cold fronts are likely to face lightning and thunderstorms as shown below.

10) The system is moving towards North direction (Particularly North-West direction) from North direction. Where warm air is moving towards the North (from the south) and cold air is moving towards the south (from North). The direction symbol in the station model plot is the wind direction from which it is approaching the station.
