Frederick Herzberg, a psychologist, developed a theory of workplace motivation called the two-factor theory.

He wanted to study the correlation between employee attitude and workplace motivation.

The two factor theory consists of two sets of factors (hygiene factors and motivators) that are assumed to influence motivation in work place either by increasing employee satisfaction or decreasing it.

The hygiene factors described the factors that caused dissatisfaction at workplace. They are extrinsic factors (independent of work) that are linked to things such as job security, working conditions, leadership quality, compensation, relationship with co-workers or superiors etc.
