Patients who receive cortisone drug therapy, experience decrease of Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) secretion and degrading (shrinking) of adrenal glands. In your words, explain, why patients experience these changes?
Cortisone is a glucocorticoid and that is a steroid hormone produced by Zona fasciculata of adrenal cortex. This hormone secretion is under control of HPA axis which hypothelemus - pituitary - adrenal axis and this will be suppressed when cortisone therapy is going on.
ACTH is made under pituitary comtrol and due to pituitary suppression.,this will also be suppressed. Glucocorticoids are steroid hormone that act like cortisol and when body sense that cortisone is present, they secrete less ACTH and degrade or shrink the adrenal glands.
