Describe the roles of nurses.

The primary role of a nurse is to care, advocate and support the individual during the illness and thus to achieve an optimal level of well being.

1.Patient care include :

Meeting the physical needs and psychological needs, assessment of the health problems according to priority, setting the goal to achieve, identification of nursing Diagnosis, plan the care and implement it according to the priority and evaluate the care given. Proper documentation and communication skills are very essential to impart effective patient care

While implementing the care planned nurse can act as a caregiver, counselor , teacher, administrator, advocate, collaborator with other health care team, decision maker, coordinator with other team members etc.

2. Patient advocacy includes

Nurse has to advocate for the best interests of patient and make sure of patient dignity through out the treatment. She can make decisions for the patient and support the patient interest. She has to collaborate the patient care with other health team members.

3. Patient education and support

The nurse has to explain to the patient and the support people regarding health, illness, treatment, medication, what to expect, what to do at home after discharge etc. Nurse should take care of the rehabilitation of the patient and also regarding home care and follow up.

4. Nurse has also a crucial role of administrator and should be a researcher and can promote the evidence based practice.
