PCA is nothing but Patient controlled anaesthesia .It is an electroinically controlled infusion pump delivering analgesic whemwhen patient presses a button.The rate of medication to be administered are pre set by the provider or anesthetist.

Indication:

It is used to relieve pain which are not controllable with oral medication

Administered after surgery

Outcome :

• Patient can self administer medication
• decreases pain
• Faster relief from pain
• Less medication are used for pain control

Evaluation :

• The pain level is controlled or patient can bear pain
• improved patient recovery

The nurse should assess whether right quantity of medication is administered, educating the patient for how to use it,assess and document pain level.
