A tank containing a chemical of molecular weight 200, leaks the chemical into a containment dike of area 10 ft x 10 ft, filling it to a depth of 2 inches before anyone notices the problem (let’s say it’s the night shift). The vapor pressure of the liquid is 300 mm Hg at the ambient temperature of 75oF. Estimate:

  • The mass transfer coefficient, K, for evaporation of this liquid, assuming Ko for water (MWt =18) is 0.83 cm/sec                    Ans: 0.37 cm/sec
  • The evaporation rate of the chemical from the diked area, Qm in lb/sec   Ans: 0.247
  • The concentration of the chemical, Cppm, in air in the vicinity of the dike, if the ventilation rate, Qv, is 3000 ft3/min, and there is very little wind, so that k = 0.1.             Ans: 96,000
