Strategic trade policies are taken by the countries that are unilateral in nature. Though, international trade in either bilateral or involves more than 2 countries. Hence, when one nation takes strategic trade policy initiatives, then the nation only thinks about the best interests of domestic economy. In response to it, other affected nations who suffer take trade measures that are restrictive and retaliatory in nature.

In a recent case, Trump administration of the USA banned Different types of Chinese goods in the USA under the name of faulty trade terms and conditions. It was a strategic trade policy of the USA. In response to it, China also banned some categories of US products in its own country of China. Now, it is the trade war of the size of more than $2 Billion between USA and China. It has happened due to the unilateral policies by USA and then retaliation by China as a consequence, making both nations to suffer.
