A reaction is said to be endothermic when heat is absorbed by the system form the surrounding. This results a decrease in the temperature of the surrounding and the sorrounding becomes cool. for an endothermic reaction DeltaH is positive.

However, reaction is said to be exothermic when heat is released to the surrounding. This results an increase in the temperature of the surrounding. When the temperature of the surrounding increases it becomes hot and we feel warm when we touch it. DeltaH is negative for an exothermic reaction.

When HCl(aq) reacts with NaOH(aq), the beaker becomes warm which conforms that heat is released to the surrounding. Hence the reaction is exothermic.

Hence (a) is the correct answer.   (answer)
