Ketone bodies represent 3 molecules that are formed when excess acetyl CoA cannot enter the TCA cycle.it represents 3 major molecules Acetoacetate,Beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetone.Normal people produce ketones at a lower rate.They are only formed in the Liver.They are important sources of eneergy for the peripheral tissues because it is soluble in acqueous solution .They are are produced in liver during periods when the Acetyl CoA excess the oxidative capacity of the liver.It is used in proportion to their concentration in the blood by extrahepatic tissues.Tollens reagent is used to distinguish between Aldehydes and ketones

Ketosis takes place when the body runs out of glycogen stores for energy and uses different stores for energy such as fat stores or protein in muscle.Fasting typically induces ketosis.The adverse effects of these are loss of apetite,dramatic weight loss and wasting of lean muscle tissue.Some people encourage ketosis by following a diet called the ketogenic or low carbohydrate diet.The aim of the diet is to try and burn unwanted fat by forcing the body to rely on fat for energy rather than carbohydrates.Ketosis is also commmonly observed in patients with diabetes ,as the process can occur if the body does not have enough insulin or is not using insulin correctly.Problemems associated with extreme levels of ketosis are more likely to develop in patients with type1 diabetes compared with type 2 diabetes patients.
