A boy carrying a bowling ball climbs to the top of a ladder which stands next to a trampoline. He then drops the ball onto the trampoline. Will the ball bounce to a height greater than the release point? Explain.

using conservation of energy

potential energy = energy stored by trampoline + energy loss due to air resistance

means, when the boy drops the ball, due to air friction, some value of its energy keep on dissipating, in downward motion and upward motion as well after bouncing up by trampoline.

so the height ball reached after bouncing must be less than the height from where the ball dropped.

moreover, if we consider the ideal ( or vacuum) case, if there is no loss due to air resistance, even then, the ball can reach max height upto the dropped height.

the ball never reach at higher level in any case, provided it must be dropped i. e. no initial velocity of kE given it in any way.
