the cross sectional area of the capillaries are comparatively lesser than arteries and as the cross sectional area decreases the flow velocity is also decreases due to increased resistance of the vessel wall. Blood flow velocity is slowest in the capillaries as compared to arteries and this allows more time for exchange of gases and nutrients.
