suppose you are given the height of the atmosphere. why cant you use " P = Pinitial + rho*g*h to calculate the atmospheric pressure
Hi
First of all we need to understand that in this case while using
the aoe equation we use the assumptions that the density is
constant.
So we normally use this equation generally for the case of the
liquids whose density is constant.
In the case of atmosphere when we go up the density is less because
the effect of the gravity decreases thus we can't assume the
density to be contant and can't use this equation.
Hope this helps
Feel free to comment in the case of any doubt.
Thank you

Please derive an equation for the pressure as a function of height in a hydrostatic atmosphere. Assume that the atmosphere has a linear temperature lapse rate of Γ. (b) If the atmospheric lapse rate is 6 K/km, the surface pressure is 1000 hPa, and the surface temperature is 280K what is the pressure at 5 km? Assume the air is dry. (c) How does this pressure compare to that computed for an isothermal atmosphere? To do this calculation requires choosing...
Suppose the atmosphere has its pressure given by p ( z ) = p 0 e ^ − z / H with p 0 = 1 atm and T ( z = 0 ) = 273 K. Now suppose a 1 kg parcel is lifted adiabatically one scale height H . How much work does the parcel do on the environment in the process? What is the change in its specific internal energy, u ?
(a) The probability distribution for the height h of molecules
of mass m in our atmosphere, assuming a constant temperature, is
given by
P(h) ∝ e-mgh/kBT
Normalize the probability distribution and derive an expression
for the average height of molecules in the atmosphere.
(b) Estimate the height of Oxygen molecules in the atmosphere,
and of Nitrogen molecules.

A diagram of a U tube for measuring osmotic pressure is shown below. The height different between the two columns of liquid is 10.00 Cm. The dashed line represent a semi-permeable membrane through which solvent molecules can pass, but solute molecules can not. i) On which side (right or left) is the solute located? ii) Calculate the osmotic pressure in atmospheres. Hint this is actually easy: The pressure difference is given by rho gH. Where rho is the density of...
