As shown in the enclosed drawing -

Vertical force component on nail = 140 × 30/5 = 840 N. (moments)

Horizontal force component on nail = 840 * tanθ

= 840 * tan30 = 485 N

(a) Total force exerted by the hammer claws on the nail = √[840² + 485²]

= 970 N (Answer)

(b) Horizontal component of force = 485 - 140 = 345 N (balance of horizontal force components)

Vertical component = 840 N (balance of vertical force components)

Therefore, the force exerted by the surface at the point of contact with the hammer head,

F = 345i + 840j assuming x is positive to the right and y is positive upwards.

So, magnitude of force, |F| = sqrt[345^2 + 840^2]

= 908.1 N

Direction, \Theta = tan^-1(840 / 345) = 67.7 deg. in counter clockwise direction from + x-axis.
