  • Colours have different interpretations in different cultures.Red is the color of blood, the color of wine, and the color of rubies. In any culture, red is an attention-getter, and there’s probably a reason for that.In Western cultures, like America and Europe, red is the color of passion and excitement. It has both positive and negative associations- danger, love and excitement. Red is also associated with power and has some religious undertones when used with green to represent Christmas. The multiple, and varying, Western associations with the color are a combination of different meanings from other cultures.
  • Eastern and Asian cultures on the other hand interpret red colour as the color of happiness, joy and celebration.
  • Colors have always played a large part in the Indian culture and have deep significance for people. In Hinduism, colors are often related to the certain gods and bring various associations. Proper use of the colors is vital for Indians because they are believed to create the appropriate environment to keep people cheerful.
  • It is often the color worn by Indian brides on their wedding day because it is thought to bring luck, long life and happiness. Red is also associated with the goddesses Durga who has red tongue and almost red eyes. In the Southern India, the red color stands for violence and disruption.
  • It is also a color often associated with Chinese restaurants in the United States, because of the associations with luck and happiness. Specifically in India, the color relates to purity and in Japan it is associated with life, but also anger or danger.
  • On the other hand, some countries in Africa associate red with death, and in Nigeria it represents aggression and vitality. It’s considered a lucky charm in Egypt and symbolizes good fortune and courage in Iran.
  • In western cultures black is the color of finality, death, formality and mourning in North American and European cultures. It is also considered powerful and strong and can imply control or force.
  • In eastern and asian cultures, black can be connected to masculinity and is the color for boys in China. It also represents wealth, heath and prosperity. In Thailand and Tibet though, black is most closely associated with evil.
  • Latin cultures also associate the color with masculinity and is the preferred color for men’s clothing. It is also linked to mourning. In middle east, black has somewhat contrasting but symbiotic meanings – it represents both rebirth and mourning. Evil and mystery are also associated with black. In Africa it symbolizes age, maturity, and masculinity. In Indian culture, this color is associated with the lack of desirability, negativity, and inertia.
  • Every culture is unique and has its specialties. Therefore an understanding of different interpretations of colours helps to create designs specific to the culture, which can connect better with people and reflect what they believe in.
