Given 20.0 mL of 5.0 M sugar solution.

We know that 1 L = 1000 mL

Therefore 1 mL = 1/1000 L

Converting 20 mL to litres = 20\times1/1000 = 0.02 L

So we have 0.02 L of 5.0 M sugar solution.

converting this 5.0 M 0.02 L sugar solution to 1 M,

We can use the equation, M1V1 = M2V2

If M1 = 5.0 M

M2 = 1.0 M

V1 = 0.02 L

V2 = (5.0 \times 0.02) / 1.0

   = 0.1 L

so we require 0.1 L of water to make 1 M sugar solution from 5 M, 20 mL sugar solution.
