Sepsis is the systemic inflammatory response to infection.

Pathophysiology

Due to infection, neutrophils and macrophages of white blood cells releases cytokines.

Stimulate extrinsic coagulation cascade

Thus inhibits fibrinolysis and consumption of endogenous anticoagulants ,causes micro vascular thrombosis.

This micro circulation dysfunction leads to tissue hypoxia, tissue damage. Then ,organ dysfunction and death.

Etiology

Microbes such as,

  • Bacteria
  • Virus
  • Funges

Causes sepsis.

Conditions like pneumonia, abdominal infection, any kidney infection, blood stream can also trigger sepsis.

Clinical manifestations

  • Fever above 101 degree farenheit
  • Tachycardia (above 90 beats per minute)
  • Tachypnea

These are the main symptoms of sepsis.

Sepsis leads to severe sepsis and septic shock if untreated and symptoms also worse as the condition deteriorate.
