Kelly's Professional Criteria
- Nursing has emerged throughout history from being task oriented
to what it is today, where education and research lay the
foundation of our profession. There has been ongoing controversy on
whether nursing is in fact a profession or an occupation, even
among nursing organizations. Lucie Kelly has spent most of her
career exploring the dimensions of professional nursing.
- She is a registered nurse (RN) herself and also is a Doctor of
Philosophy (PhD) and a member of the Fellow of the American Academy
of Nursing (FAAN). The eight characteristics that she uses to
describe professionalism are what I believe nursing to be.
- The sixth criteria states that practitioners are motivated by
service and consider their work an important component of their
lives. Being a nurse is giving of yourself for the benefit of
others. Nursing is our career and with that each of us must have an
income but at the end of the day, it is not the paycheck that
matters, it is our patients and their family members. I consider
myself a nurse in every aspect of my life.
Kelly’s seventh professional criteria is that there is a code of
ethics to guide the decisions and conduct of practitioners. Nursing
as a profession has many standards and rules that guide us in our
daily practices. For nursing care to be effective trust must
develop between a nurse and the patient. We must be trustworthy and
ethical in every action we do for this to occur and so we are
appropriate mentors to the less experienced nurse.
- Kelly’s final professional criteria states that there is an
organization that encourages and supports high standards of
practice. There are numerous professional nursing associations to
consider for membership that support and encourage nurses and our
profession.
