Why are most organic compounds nonconducting and insoluble in water?

Check all that apply.

  • They don't conduct electricity because they are covalent, not ionic.

  • Most organic compounds don't dissolve in water because they are polar.

  • Most organic compounds don't dissolve in water because they are nonpolar.

  • They don't conduct electricity because they are ionic, not covalent.

Answer #1

Organic compounds are formed by the covalent bonds( formed by the sharing of electron ) and are generally nonpolar in nature ...due to having covalent bond they can't dissociate in any solvent...there dissociation rates are very slow...hence there will be no formation of ions in the solution of organic compounds to conduct electricity. As well most of the organic compounds are non polar in nature and water is polar ..so from like dissolve like statement that mean polar compounds will dissolve in polar solvent and nonpolar compounds in nonpolar solvent... water is polar solvent so it can't dissolve organic compounds as it is nonpolar. So 1st and 3rd option are right.

with others? Oil and water don't mix Gasoline and water also do not mix. However, gasoline and oil do mix. To understand solubility we must look at two important characteristics: geometry and bond polarity (ionic. nonpolar and polar). From these two characteristics the overall molecular polarity can be determined. The statement "like dissolves like" provides a good basis for understanding solubility. A substance with similar characteristics will mix with another substance with similar characteristics. This can be summarized as polar...
