Answer #1

a) Torque \tau = r F sin \Theta

\tau = 2 * 3 * 10^2 * sin 40

\tau = 385.67 Nm

b) Torque due to 40 N = 1.2 * 40 = 48 Nm in counter clockwise direction

Torque due to 25 N = -1.2 * 25 = -30 Nm in clockwise direction

Net torque = 48 - 30 = 18 Nm

You have a wheel with two torques acting on it. The first torque, 40 N · m, is due to a motor, and this torque has a direction that tends to increase the rotational velocity of the wheel. The second torque is due to friction on the axle, so that it tends to diminish the rotational velocity, and it has a magnitude of 14 N · m.
