Eduardo and Maria are residents of California. For the first six months of the year, Eduardo earned wages of $30,000. Maria did not earn any income. On June 30, Eduardo and Maria physically separated with no intention of reconciliation. During the last six months, Eduardo earned wages of $30,000 and Maria earned wages of $10,000. They have decided to file separate returns. What amount must Eduardo and Maria each report as community income on their individual returns?

The income which is generated from community property is community income. Commumity income is divided equally among the spouses when they file separate return. Community income also includes wages earned if the spouse is domiciled in a community property state.
In the above secenerio for the first six months the wages earned will be considered as community income and will be divided equally among Eduardo and Maria and the income earned after they are phsically seprated with no intention of reconciliation the communty income status ended. So income earned for last six months will be considered seprate income for you and the spouse
Hence for first six months the community income is $30000 and it will
be divided equally and will be reported as community income
Eduardo= $15000 (30000/2)
Maria= $15000
