After the distillation the collected fraction will have methanol If it shows the following peaks in the IR spectrum,

C-H stretch at 2990-2850 cm-1 [this is typical for aliphatic C-H stretchings]

O-H stretch at 3200-3500 cm-1 i[this is due to the intermolecular H-bonding present between methanol molecules]
