Answer #1
Concepts and reason

This problem is based on the fundamental concept of mass spectroscopy.

The mass spectroscopy is an analytical method for measuring the molecular or atomic weight of the sample.

Fundamentals

In a mass spectroscopy, a compound is ionized in to the ions and these are separated on the basis of their mass/charge ratio. The mass and charge ratio represented by number of ions is recorded as mass spectrum.

Part a

The relative intensity of 100 is assigned to base peak.

Part b

The most intense peak in the mass spectrum is the base peak.

Part c

The original molecule that has lost only one electron is represented by the molecular ion peak.

Part d

A smaller charged fragment of the original molecule can be represented by both the base peak and a radical cation.

Part e

A positively charged species is represented by all the base peak, parent ion, molecular ion and a radical cation in mass spectroscopy.

Ans: Part a

The base peak is assigned a relative intensity of 100.

Part b

The base peak is the most intense peak in the mass spectrum.

Part c

The molecular ion peak represents the original molecule that has only lost an electron.

Part d

The base peak and a radical cation represent a smaller charged fragment of the original molecule.

Part e

The base peak, parent ion, molecular ion, a radical cation all represents a positively charged species.
