The net investment income tax is computed on.the income from Investments. With Effect from 1st January 2013, Taxpayers have to pay 3.8% on their Net income from investment or by the amount by which MARI exceeds the Statutory threshold limit whichever is less . The Statutory threshold limit is defined based on the filling status.

Net investment income includes interest, dividends, capital gains, rental and royalty income, and non-qualified annuities etc but its does not include wages, unemployment compensation, Social Security Benefits, alimony, and or any other self-employment income.
