Unbundling is a process by which a company with several different lines of business retains core businesses and sells off assets, product lines, divisions or subsidiaries. Unbundling is done for a variety of reasons, but the goal is always to create a better performing company or companies.

The concept of the “unbundled” corporation is that there are three fundamentally different types of businesses:

Customer relationship businesses, product innovation businesses, and infrastructure businesses.

The three types can and often do co-exist within a single corporation, but they are often better served “unbundled” into standalone entities.

An example of company using unbundling business model is Orange SA formerly France Telco. The company outsourced content and equipment, to sharpen its focus on branding and segmenting customers and services. It focuses on customer relations after outsourcing their operation and maintenance,
