Answer #1

(a) The engine of a boat pushes it east and the river current pushes the boat north.

What is the net force on the boat?

North net Fy West Fx East South

According to an above figure, we have

Fnet = sqrt{}Fx2 + Fy2

where, Fx = horizontal force on the boat

Fy = vertical force on the boat

(b) A parachute pulls straight up on a person and their weight pulls straight down.

What is the net force on a person?

In a vertical direction, we have

sum Fy = 0 ; Fnet - w = 0

We know that, weight of a person (w) = m g

Then, we get

Fnet = m g

where, m = mass of a person

g = acceleration due to gravity

    Question: When an object is pushed several ways at once, what is the net effect? In mechanics, we think of "force" as a push or a pull. A scientific definition will be discussed later in lecture, and the effects that forces produce on motion will be a major topic of this course. The unit of force in the SI system is the Newton (abbreviation N). For purposes of this exercise, we will be concerned with the way that different forces...

    The size of the magnetic force on a straight wire of length L carrying current I in a uniform magnetic field with strength B is F=ILBsin(?). Here ? is the angle between the direction of the current (along the wire) and the direction of the magnetic field. Hence Bsin(?) refers to the component of the magnetic field that is perpendicular to the wire, B?. Thus this equation can also be written as F=ILB?. The direction of the magnetic force on...
