Multiply or divide as indicated. See Examples.
EXAMPLE 3 Multiplying Decimals
Multiply.
(a) 29.3 × 4.52
(b) 31.42 × 65
(c) 0.05 × 0.3
Here 5 × 3 = 15. Be careful placing the decimal point.
EXAMPLE 4 Dividing Decimals
Divide.
(a) 233.45 ÷ 11.5
Write the problem as follows.
To see why this works, write the division in fractional form and multiply by
.
The result is the same as when we moved the decimal point one place to the right in the divisor and the dividend.
Move the decimal point straight up and divide as with whole numbers.
In the second step of the division, 115 does not divide into 34, so we used zero as a placeholder in the quotient.
(b) 8.949 ÷ 1.25 (Round the quotient to two decimal places.)
We carried out the division to three decimal places so that we could round to two decimal places, obtaining the quotient 7.16.
EXAMPLE 5 Multiplying and Dividing by Powers of 10
Multiply or divide as indicated.
(a)
(b)
0.2 × 0.03
