Dendritic cells gather antigen from tissues and then migrate to the lymph nodes where they present it to naive T cells. Dendritic cells that detect microbial products or tissue damage express co-stimulatory molecules, signifying to the naive T cells that the material being presented is associated with danger or damage. T cells that recognize antigen presented by dendritic cells expressing co-stimulatory molecules become activated.
