Using an FTPS Client

FTP using Secure Sockets Layer (FTPS) uses the Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security (SSL/TLS) to encrypt commands sent over the control port in an FTP session. FTPS is a file transport layer resting “on top” of SSL/TLS, meaning that it uses the FTP protocol to transfer files to and from SSL-enabled FTP servers. In this project, you will download and install an FTPS client.

1. Use your Web browser to go to www.glub.com.

The location of content on the Internet, such as this program, may change without warning. If you are no longer able to access the program through the preceding URL, then use a search engine to search for “Glub Secure FTP Client.”

2. Click Secure FTP Client.

3. Click Free download and under OS, select the operating system that you will be using.

4. Under Email, enter your e-mail address.

5. Click Download Now and then save the file to a location on your computer.

6. When the file has finished downloading, click Run and follow the default settings to install Secure FTP.

7. After the installation, launch Secure FTP, if necessary.

8. When the Open Connection dialog box opens, under Host Name, enter ftp.secureftp-test.com.

9. Under Username, enter test.

10. Under Password, enter test.

11. Click Connect.

12. If the message The server certificate has expired. Continue anyway? appears, click OK.

13. The connection will be completed to a test site, as seen in the Secure FTP window illustrated in Figure.

14. In the lower pane, scroll back through to view the FTPS commands that were issued to connect to the secure FTP server. Find 234 Using authentication type. What protocol is being used?

15. Find 227 Entering passive mode. What is passive mode? Why is it used here?

16. In the upper pane, click New Text Document.txt.

17. Click Remote.

18. Click Download to download the document to your computer.

19. In the lower pane, scroll back through to view the FTPS commands that were issued. What can you tell about these commands?

20. In the lower pane, scroll back through to view the FTPS commands that were issued to connect to the secure FTP server. What did you find?

21. Click File.

22. Click Exit.

23. Close all windows.
