Fresh graph juice contains 12.0 wt% solids and the balance water, and concentrated graph juice contains 42.0 wt% solids. Initially a single evaporation process was used for the concentration, but volatile constituents of the juice escaped with the water, leaving the concentrate with a flat taste The current process overcomes this problem by bypassing the evaporator with a fraction of the fresh juice. The juice that enters the evaporator is concentrated to 58 wt% solids, and the evaporator product stream is mixed with the bypassed fresh juice to achieve the desired final concentration (42.0 wt% solid).

 (a) Draw and label a flowchart of this process, neglecting the vaporization of everything in the juice but water (i.e., only water evaporates from the evaporator).

 (b) Perform the D.O.F. analysis around bypass point of the feed stream, evaporator, the bypass- evaporator product mixing point and overall system. Based on your D.O.F. analysis, please identify the location of your flowchart where number of degree of freedom equals zero.

 (c) Calculate the amount of product (42.0 wt% concentrate) produced per 100 kg fresh juice fed to the process and the fraction of the feed that bypasses the evaporator.

Fresh orange juice containing 75.0 wt% water and the balance solids is concentrated in an evaporator. In order to improve the taste of the orange juice, a fraction of the feed stream is diverted around the evaporator as a bypass stream and mixed with the outlet stream from the evaporator. The combined product stream (= outlet stream from evaporator + bypass) contains 65 wt% solids and the balance water. Ninety percent of the water in the feed entering the evaporator...

please solve this questuon Fresh orange juice contains 13% solids and rest water. It is concentrated to contain 45% solids. In the present process, the evaporator is bypassed with a fraction of fresh juice. Juice that enters the evaporator is concentrated to 60% solids and is mixed with bypass juice to achieve the desired final concentration. Calculate the amount of final juice per kg of fresh juice fed to the process and the fraction of the feed in percentage that...

Fresh orange juice contains approximately 10.0 wt% solids (sugar, citric acid and other indigenous ingredients) and frozen concentrate contains approximately 42.0 wt% solids. The frozen concentrate is obtained by evaporating water from the fresh juice to produce a mixture that is approximately 61.0 wt% solids. However, so that the flavor of the concentrate will closely approximate that of fresh juice, the concentrate from the evaporator is blended with fresh orange juice (and other minor additives) to produce a final concentrate...

Engineers Sophia and Giles are modifying a process to make concentrated apple cider starting from a slurry - a slurry is a mixture of solids in a liquid that can normally be pumped. A slurry made with apples having a mass fraction of 0.462 and the balance water is fed to a juicer at a rate of 31.7 kg/min. Seventy percent of the apples entering the juicer leave as part of the solid waste stream (containing apples and water). The...

    4. In the production of soybean oil, beans containing 18.0 wt% oil and 82.0 wt% solids are ground and fed to a stirred tank (also called an extractor), along with a stream of liquid n containing recycled hexane and fresh hexane. The feed ratio is 4.2 kg hexane/kg beans. ground beans are suspended in the liquid, and essentially all of the oil in the beans is ex into the hexane. The stream exiting the extractor (also called the effluent) passes...

% water, the rest of the liquor stream is solids. Beet molasses contains 50 wt% sucrose, 1.0 wt% dextrose, and 18 wt% water, the rest of the molasses stream contains solid. Beet molasses is mixed with corn-steep liquor and water in a mixing tank to produce a dilute sugar mixture. The exit stream contains 2.0 wt%, dextrose and 12.6 wt% sucrose and is ready to be fed into a fermentation unit. See Figure 3.26. (Adapted from Doran PM, Bioprocess Engineering...

The fresh feed flow rate to the process is 50.0 kg/min. The figure is shown above. The system can be considered to have a dye in solution with water and the dye remains soluble over the range of concentrations in the process. The ultrafiltration units produce streams...

Brown sugar is a mixture of white sugar and molasses. Unrefined brown sugar contains a large portion of molasses. After one round of crystallization of this unrefined sugar, the brown sugar product contains 10.00 wt% molasses and the remainder white sugar. A second round of crystallization reduces the molasses content to 1.40 wt% molasses. A plant wishes to produce a brown sugar ideal for baking that contains 4.00 wt% molasses. In order to acheive this concentration of molasses, a plant...
