Respiratory disorders are most common in children under Five years of age.

Respiratory failure :- occurs when gas exchange is impaired characterised by the condition know as hypoxaemia .There are two types of respiratory failure
Type 1 where there is low oxygen and normal or low carbon dioxide. It affects lung tissues.
Type 2 where there is low oxygen and high carbon dioxide.causes of type 2 are COPD chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, chest wall deformities etc.
Detection of respiratory dysfunction is done by spirometry, blood gas analysis, pulse oximetry.
Treatment is aimed to relieve respiratory distress , bronchodilator, corticosteroid are the line of treatment.
Unless treated at this terminal stage prognosis is poor
Upper respiratory tract infections affecting nasopharyngitis, acute pharyngitis which is inflammation of pharynx, sinusitis i.e inflammation of sinuses.
Lower respiratory tract infection including chronic bronchitis, bronchiolitis and mostly commonly Pneumonia which can cause by bacteria as well as virus and to any part of lungs involving lobes lobules. Pneumonia affects all age groups
Congenital diaphragmatic hernia in which the muscle separating chest from abdomen does not closes during prenatal period , this the abdominal contents comes up in the lung spaces and the child has breathing difficulty.
Infection to pleural membrane may cause pleuritis.
ARDS Acute respiratory distress syndrome is most common in infants where the lungs fails to develop fully thus resulting into respiratory distress. This is an emergency and needs intensive care of child.

Atelectasis:- condition characterised by dysnea caused by partial or fully collapse of lungs.
