Question

Physics 2018-2019 Lesson Check 7.57 Constants A 950-kg red car (Figure 1) with a speed of v 20.0 m/s approaches an intersection, traveling in the positive u direction. A 1300-kg blue minivan is heading for the same intersection in the positive y direction. The car and minivan collide and stick together, producing wreckage that moves at an angle of θ= 40.0, relative to the positive rats. PartA Find the initial speed of the blue minivan. Answer #1

Let the car is travelling on X-axis and the minivan is travelling on the Y-axis,

=>Let the final velocity of the wreckage is v m/s and the initial velocity of the minivan is u m/s

By equating the components on X & Y axis by the law of momentum conservation:-

On X-axis:-

=>m1u1 = (m1+m2) x vcos40*

=>950 x 20= (950+1300) x v x cos40

=>v = 11.02 m/s

On Y-axis:-

=>m2u2 = (m1+m2) x vsin41*

=>1300 x u = (950+1300) x 11.02 x sin40

=>u = 12 m/s
