Question

Reaction (draw the reaction scheme including starting material, reagents and expected product): OH NaBr H2SO4 3-phenylpropan-

Please, identify a procedure that will help make the product and purify it properly. Given 4 mL of starting material (alcohol) and as much necessary of other materials for the reaction. Using reflux, separatory funnel, distillation procedures. Listed below is what is provided.

1. Reflux: Sulfuric acid is provided at 9M. Include temperature and time of reflux, please.

2. Separation: sodium bicarbonate and water provided for extrication

3. Purification: Provided Sodium Sulfate

4. Distillation: What will be the distillate and what will remain in the pot?

Update: The reaction is provided above. 3-phenyl-1-propanol mixed with sodium bromide and sulfuric acid to produce 3-bromopropylbenzene.

Experiment Write Up Proposal You will write up a synthesis procedure for one reaction that could be potentially run in a face- to-face Chem 2321 lab session. Your proposal will include an introduction and procedure. The procedure will include step-by-step instructions for running the reaction (including reaction monitoring), work-up. (product isolation and purification), and analysis (characterization). You will need to include sample calculations for percent yield and provide sample spectra analysis. You must upload your proposal as a single document...

Introduction A common method for synthesizing alkenes is by dehydrating (removing the elements of water) an alcohol. The dehydration is accomplished by heating the alcohol with either phosphoric or sulfuric acid. In this experiment, the dehydration reaction is illustrated by the conversion of 2-methylcyclohexanol to a mixture of alkenes (remember the Saytzeff rule). Information Each step of this E1 elimination reaction is reversible and thus, the reaction may be driven to completion by removing one or more of the products,...
