ABSTRACT This study was designed to investigate the difference in psychosocial dis- tress experienced between sheltered battered women who have high levels of spirituality and those who have low spirituality levels. It was hypothe- sized that participants who report high levels of spirituality experience less psychosocial distress than those who report low levels of spirituality. Sub- jects were 50 female residents of a shelter for battered women. Their spir- itual beliefs and levels of distress were studied after one week in the shel- ter. The hypothesis was not supported by the data. Possible explanations for the findings were discussed, along with recommendations for practice and further research. An observational study design where a specific group of individuals (cohort- battered women) is followed over time and subjects are classified according to if they do or do not have a particular risk factor. The group initially does not yet have the outcome of interest and the investigator follows them to see if they develop it.
