Question

e that an animals gestation period is related to the animals lifespan? The scatterplot shows Gestation Period (in days) vs. Life Expectancy (in years) for 18 species of mammals. The highlighted point at the far right represents humans. Complete parts a through e 1300M 40 Lite Expectancy a) For these data, r0538. This is not a very strong relationship. Do you think the association would be stronger i humans were removed? Explain O A Stronger. Both slope and correlation would increase O B. Weaker. There would be less data used O C. Stronger. Its easier to match a line to fewer data points O D. Weaker. Correlation would decrease.

Answer #1

The gestation period vs life expectancy for humans is towards the extreme right.

This point can be considered as an outlier, a point which is different from the other point.

Outliers mess up the slope of a regression line (they also mess up the correlation).

Outliers pull the line towards them; in our case, the human data is flattening the line.

The slope would be steeper ; that is, the correlation would be higher if the point were to be removed.

Thus, the correct answer is A. The slope and the correlation will both increase.
