Indomethacin is a weak acid, it ionizes in water as,

C19H16ClNO4 + H2O = C19H15ClNO-4 + H3O+

>>Unionized form = C19H16ClNO4

>>Ionized form = C19H15ClNO4-

A) pH = 5.5

According to Hendersen-Hasselbalch equation,

pH = pKa + log [C19H15ClNO4-) ] / [C19H16ClNO4]

5.5 = 6.5 + log [Ionized] / [Unionized]

log [Ionized] / [Unionized] = -1.0

[Ionized] / [Unionized] = antilog (-1.0) = 0.10

[Ionized] / [Unionized] = 1/10

B) pH = 7.5

According to Hendersen-Hasselbalch equation,

pH = pKa + log [C19H15ClNO4-) ] / [C19H16ClNO4]

7.5 = 6.5 + log [Ionized] / [Unionized]

log [Ionized] / [Unionized] = 1.0

[Ionized] / [Unionized] = antilog 1.0 = 10

[Ionized] / [Unionized] = 10/1
